"For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology"

FIRST®, a non-profit global organization based in New Hampshire, was founded in 1989 to inspire young peoples' interest and participation in science and technology. FIRST® provides innovative programs that encourage upcoming generations to pursue education and career opportunities in STEAM. As students participate in FIRST®, they build self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

FIRST® combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and a short deadline, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, hone teamwork skills, and design robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get!

A core part of the FIRST® identity is Gracious Professionalism®. The term was coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers and it continues to be something that all FIRST® teams deeply value. While there are many different interpretations of what the term means, FIRST® teams generally agree that it defines kind and helpful behavior. Throughout any competition, students will constantly help one another, even if they’re on separate teams. Whether it’s one team providing tools to another or multiple teams working on a robot together, these acts reflect what FIRST® prioritizes: the thrill of learning STEAM, rather than simply winning a competition.
