Who are the Gadget Girls?

Gadget Girls 4816 is a team that was founded in 2012 in association with Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines. The team is made up of high-school girls mainly centered in the Research Triangle of North Carolina. Alongside hundreds of teams around the globe and about ninety teams in North Carolina, we participate in FIRST® to build robots. We also share our knowledge of STEAM with young girls and underrepresented communities.

When does the team meet? 

During the Build Season, an eight-week period that starts on the first Saturday of January, we typically meet on Saturdays from 11:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M. We also have meetings during the week from 6:00 P.M to 9:00 P.M. Weekly meetings are flexible and depend on the progress of the robot. 

Once we’re off Build Season/during the summer, we usually meet on Saturdays between 1:00 P.M and 4:00 P.M.

How much dedication does the team require from me?

Ideally, it'd be best if you could attend weekly meetings during Build Season. Likewise, it’s heavily encouraged to attend the outreach events that involve the team. However, there is no attendence requirement!

How much involvement is required from parents?

That’s totally up to the parent! Most parents on the team have girls who are (or have been) on the team, and they help the students as parent volunteers or mentors. However, there’s no stress to be a part of the team. All you have to do is support your child!

Is there a fee for joining the team?

Technically, yes. While joining Gadget Girls 4816 itself is free, you and your child/guardian are required to join as a Girl Scout. Joining Girl Scouts has an annual fee based on whether you’re joining as a child or an adult. You can check out the Interest Form here. Do I need to have any prior experience in STEAM?

You don’t need to have experience at all. We’ll teach you the basics as best as we can --- then it’s up to you to drive yourself forward and help us build our robots! All we ask is that you have passion for this craft and a willingness to learn. 

Likewise, this team isn’t limited to those who are interested in STEAM. The team consists of people who build the robot and people who find ways to fund it. We have students who support the team through professional business methods and social media.

Can a transgender girl/non-binary person join the team?

Of course! The team is open-minded and LGBTQ+ friendly. After all, several of our members are a part of the queer community themselves.

Do I have to sell cookies?

Nope, that’s optional. Still, it helps support Girl Scouts and the team! Besides, who doesn’t like to sell a box of cookies or two?
